Dentures Dentures are a great choice for patients missing either all of their teeth or a section of their teeth. These are important for restoring a natural look and function, such as speaking and eating, after tooth loss. There are several different types of dentures which New Life Dental can provide to you depending on your specific needs. For instance, we work with both complete and partial dentures, as well as both fixed and removable. We will also provide information on maintaining your dentures and how to properly clean and store them.Types of DenturesComplete dentures are a full set of artificial teeth designed for patients who have lost all of their teeth. These dentures are removable and are also fully customized to your mouth. We take dental impressions in order to mold dentures to fit your gums. Following extraction, you will need to wait about six to eight weeks for the gums to heal before you can use these customized dentures. We can provide temporary dentures for you to use in the meantime. Complete dentures can be supported by dental implants as well. These are small post-like structures that are placed in your jawbone and gums. Complete dentures are also known as overdentures, and they are not permanently attached to the implants. Instead, they have clips so that they can be easily removed but are sturdy when they are clicked into place. We will place the implants, which then fuse with your jawbone over the course of a few months. Fixed partial dentures, also called implant-supported bridges, are a type of partial denture that rests on dental implants. We use two dental implants for this, one on each side of the gap. Like with complete dentures, healing is needed before we can affix the partial denture. After this, the partial denture is cemented into place. You can also get removable partial dentures, which are supported by a wire framework. These sit over the top of your gums and are a great choice for patients who do not qualify to get dental implants. Immediate DenturesUnlike traditional dentures, immediate dentures can be used on the same day as the tooth extraction. These are not, however, customized to your mouth. So, they may not have the same comfort or strength as traditional dentures. These are generally meant for temporary uses, such as while you wait on your permanent dentures to come in. Denture MaintenanceBoth fixed and removable dentures need to be cleaned on a daily basis. Despite not being real teeth, they can still trap bacteria and cause gum disease. This could also cause tooth decay in your remaining natural teeth. For fixed dentures, you can use toothpaste and dental floss like you would with your natural teeth. Removable dentures, however, should be washed using soap and warm water. In addition, they should be kept moist in a denture cleanser when you are not wearing them. Use a denture brush to clean them before you place them in your mouth in the morning and after you remove them at night.
